Dog has consumed charcoal waste is there a reason for eating charcoal?

my 4 year old boxer hacked up black mucus with I can only describe as small pieces of frefuse charcoal. He is acting ok, active and eating fine. Should we be concerned? Is there a reason he would desire charcoal? (Dietary deficiency?)
