What is the least hurtful way to break up with someone you care about?

i really care for this guy, i just don't see our relationship progressing in positive ways, as he can't be honest or straightforward with me, so it would be stupid of me to stay in the relationship i guess, but i don't know how to end it without him thinking i'm a jerk.
